If your interested in placing high in the search results then keyword research is an essential element when you are creating a web page or article or press release. Keywords and keyword phrases are those words and phrases that someone is most likely to type in their search bar to find information on their subject of interest.

Now you are not going to hit the ace each and every time. But if you are diligent and keep after it, over time you’ll find your site starting to climb the search pages. Keyword research is all about taking a product and matching it with the phrases that work as a best match for that given product.

The problem for most is the that people start out and make this most common mistakes by using and focusing in keywords that have such a high degree of competition that it is nearly to place well. Your keyword research should go much deeper that just the obvious.

Looking for 3 and 4 word phrases is the easiest and least expensive route to take when you are using pay-per-click and or using article marketing as a method of driving traffic. All you really need to do is to look at your competitors sites and see how their particular keywords are structured through out there sales page.

Unfortunately most of your free keyword tools don’t offer up enough of a selection and typically you’ll get the first 50 to 100 of the top search results and you’ll also find out quickly that the numbers they offer are not real and true for the search results for that particular search term. One of the easiest ways to do this is when taking a look at your competitors sites and your on their home page simply perform a right click and then scroll down to source code and then look at meta tags and find out which terms are being used. Now remember not all people take advantage of meta tags and you may have to go to a number of sites to come up with a solid list.

Make yourself a list and do further research by bringing up sites that are ranking well for any given search term or phrase that you have just found on your first few sites. If you spend about hour or so working at this, you’ll come up with combinations of phrases you had never thought of.

This is probably the most cost effective way of doing some simple reconnaissance on what your faced with when it comes to your competition. This may seem a bit obvious but needs a mention anyway. You want to place your focus on those words and phrases that relate very closely to your product and target audience. Remember your competitors got the first page for a reason and when you study them you’ll find out information you had never thought of.
