An effective, profitable email marketing strategy can be a great way to achieve your business goals, and is well worth the time and effort you put into planning such a strategy. There are, however, many mistakes business people make with their email marketing campaigns and it’s a good idea to learn about these pitfalls and how to avoid them. Let’s look at some of the common errors in email marketing strategy.

1. Giving Quantity More Importance than Quality

Many believe that large numbers of emails are likely to result in a successful campaign – this is far from true. There is not much point in sending huge numbers of emails to the wrong people – in fact, you are more likely to annoy than to attract. It is important to ensure that you are sending your mails to the right people, at a relevant time and with relevant, interesting content. Bear this in mind when you are deciding on your email marketing strategy.

2. Poor Planning

Lack of adequate planning can derail your campaign before it even gets going. Do make sure that you have studied the market, your target audience and your competitors’ offerings, and have allocated a budget to your email marketing plan. And it is essential to create a detailed plan of action, with clearly laid-out goals and steps towards achieving them.

3. Inadequate Testing

Often, people make the mistake of launching a campaign before thinking it through fully. Just because a particular campaign has worked doesn’t make it a sure-fire formula for success. Test your campaign on a representative sample of your customers and measure the results you receive.
