The First Pieces to the SEO Puzzle

Organic rank is the new term for search engine results based purely on crawler traffic, generated by fresh, unique and valuable content. These three elements are the key to organic rank. Before you start your SEO adventure, ask yourself: 1) Who is my audience? 2) What about this site will interest that audience? and 3) What content can I produce to keep these visitors coming back? These are the key to organic ranking. If your site provides useful, meaningful and fresh content, users and subsequently search engines will keep coming back.

Now that you have a basic idea of how to gain organic search, what can you do to make sure your site is actually seen? To know that you must understand how a search engines see the internet.

Search engines deploy spiders who “crawl” the web. These spiders go through your website but in a unique way, they strip all the images, glitz and glam and read text only. So if you have a flash only site – spiders cannot read it. With this in mind, your design should be focused on getting as much content ( and your keywords) in valuable form on the site.

What about the keywords you can’t see?
In addition, every designer should know about the description, title and meta tags within their site. These tags are a great way to get your keywords seen by the spiders and therefore ranked in the search.

The Title tag is self explanatory, what is the Title of your site / or individual page – Short and sweet is best

The description tag is 1 or 2 short sentences describing your site. If you had a site about how to bake Christmas cookies, you would have a description like ” Home of the best Christmas cookie recipes. Find and bake your homemade favorites”

Lastly is your meta keywords- much like the keywords your insert in your content, these are the focus of your site. Using the same example, your keywords might be ” Christmas cookies, homemade holiday cookies, easy Christmas cookie recipes”

With these basic steps you allow your site much more visibility to search engines and can really boost that organic search.
