What to Avoid When Creating Your Google AdWords Campaigns

Google AdWords is a great tool marketers can use to advertise their business and increase their sales. Below are the top 5 things you want to avoid when creating your Google AdWords Campaigns.

1. False Advertising

This is the complete opposite of providing your prospects with value. Some believe that telling a little white lie in their campaign makes sense because it will bring more traffic to them. For example, advertising something for free when it’s not. Put yourself in your prospects shoes. If you lie to them to get them there, why should they have any faith in you or your product once they realize you’ve lied to them? They click, they don’t purchase and you pay the price for the click. False advertising is a waste of your prospect’s time and an even bigger waste of your money.

2. Ignoring The Negative Keywords Feature

This is downright dangerous. Google AdWords will match your keywords with any word or phrase they feel is relevant. This means if you’re advertising “diamonds” without negative keywords, you may come up in a search for the “Diamonds are Forever” video by Kanye West. Unfortunately for you, somebody may click on your ad and you will pay the price. Someone searching for a music video is not in your target audience. The chances of them purchasing an item from your site is very minimal because you don’t have what they were looking for in the first place. Negative keywords will eliminate searches you don’t want, ensure traffic from your target audience and keep money in your pocket.

3. Having A Small Daily Budget

Don’t be cheap. Be smart about your daily budget. The less you pay, the less advertising you will receive. If your budget is $60/day and your paying $3.00/click you are limiting yourself to 20 clicks/day. The goal is to get the most for your money and have your advertisements up and running all day long. If you want to cut back on spending, you should cut back on your keywords budget. Selecting a secondary keyword will be less expensive, you will still reach your target audience and your campaign will remain available for a longer period of time throughout the day.

4. Riding The Wave Of Your Campaign

If you notice that you aren’t getting your desired amount of daily clicks or that you aren’t making a profit from the visitors to your site, don’t just hope for a better outcome tomorrow. If you want to see different results, you have to make changes immediately. Thoroughly analyze your campaign and search for any small details that could be hindering your success rate. If you don’t know what to look for, I suggest reading Perry Marshall’s “Definitive Guide to Google AdWords” for critical tips and strategies.

5. One Word Keywords

Not only are one word keywords often more expensive, they are also far too general. Precision is a must. If you are advertising lamps tell you ideal prospects which kind of lamps you offer. Are they oil lamps? Desk lamps? Halogen lamps? Be specific! Your target audience knows what they want and are on a mission to find it. Don’t waste their time by being general. Give them what their looking for using detailed specifics.
