SEO Keyword Selection – The #1 Secret

If you don’t utilize proper keyword selection methods the remainder of your online marketing campaign will become a lesson in futility. No matter how effectively you implement your online marketing campaign your results will be poor, at best, with the wrong keywords.

Most of the time companies are over confident about selecting keyword phrases and do so without fully realizing how essential this step is. There are many problems with trying to do keyword selection for your business all by yourself.

One problem is that the typical company has trouble separating itself from the business side of things and seeing things through the eyes of the customer. You are not really the one in control of keyword selection, it’s the customer who’s really making the decision. And the only way to search engine optimize your website properly is to know which words your target customers are using – Your “SEO Keywords”.

Other common problems stem from a lack of knowledge. As a business owner you may not realize that changing just one word in a keyword phrase (or adding or removing one) your search engine results can fluctuate by 10’s and 100’s of pages in the searches. This can be the difference between getting no traffic and getting steady streams of daily visitors.

With that said, let me give you a quick secret about keyword phrases, competition and customer searches.
Some words and phrases are highly competitive and others are not, but that does not mean that the more competitive a phrase is the more searches it will get.

Let me give you an example using a couple of similar keyword phrases related to weddings.
1) wedding dresses
2) wedding rings

You may quickly assume that both have similar search volumes… because you can’t really have one without the other. Well I can tell you that one has almost twice as many searches per day as the other.
The keyword phrase ‘Wedding dresses’ averages over 158,000 searches per day while ‘wedding rings’ has only 88,000 searches.

Now let’s run a quick open search in Google and see what the competition looks like for these two phrases.
Wedding dresses: nearly 15 million results
Wedding Rings: over 37 million!

Over twice the number of results for rings compared to dresses. The keyword phrase ‘wedding rings’ has twice the number of daily searches, but just half of the competition (number of competing pages).

Two seemingly similar and related keyword phrases are not at all similar when it comes to search engine optimization.

Both of these terms are highly competitive, so I wouldn’t recommend targeting either of these as your SEO keyword phrases. Instead, you would want to find other related keywords and phrases and research them to see which ones have the best potential to improve your search engine rankings and increase targeted web site traffic.

To do this you would have to compile a large list of potential keywords and then evaluate and test them to make sure you will not end up wasting your time, and possibly money, on bad keyword phrases.

If you’ve found this information helpful I’m giving away a DVD with 7 more tips on how to create the perfect list of SEO keyword phrases for your business.
