Website Hosting Company – How to Evaluate

May 29, 2010 by  Filed under: Web Hosting

Selecting a website hosting company is something that you should take time and care over. There are a large number of companies in the market and it might be tempting to take the first cheap offer that you see. However, this is almost certainly not be the best option long term.

It is important that you choose a company that meets you needs not only now but also in the future. If your website becomes busy you will not want to move it to another website hosting company unless absolutely necessary.

You do not want to experience:

* Frequent periods when your server is down
* Your pages loading slowly
* A support service which does not provide help when you need it.

When choosing between website hosting companies you should look for:

Established Company with a Good Reputation – A company that has been in business a few years, is well known and has many customers is likely to around for quite a few more years.

Company Owns The Infrastructure:- It is safest to sign with such a company rather than a reseller.

A guarantee regarding uptime:- but look how it is monitored and what happens if it is not achieved.

Excellent Help and Support:- Technical staff should be available 24/7 and should be contactable by telephone (preferably tool free) for urgent matters. Email on its own is not acceptable.

Upgrade Potential:- Your first hosting plan is likely to be a standard shared service where multiple users are hosted on one server. If you took a cheap package you could find that the result would be that the hosting provider is tempted to overload the server but this should not be a problem with a reputable company.

The upgrade from shared hosting will normally be to VPS (Virtual Private Server) hosting. This is a way of putting multiple accounts on one server and splitting the server (cpu resources, memory, and hard drive space) so that all of these accounts act “like” their own server. If you outgrow this you can then upgrade to dedicated server hosting where you get your own physical server.

Full Service Functionality:- Your website hosting service should enable you to quickly and easily build a website or blog and operate it without any problems. You would expect to see a reasonable amount of bandwidth, disk space, email accounts, FTP accounts and databases with Cpanel for managing everything.

Even if a company meets all the above criteria I would still suggest undertaking some research based on what you intend to do. For example if you intend to create a WordPress blog see if there are any user comments regarding this relating to the hosting company you are considering.
