Fresh Content and Google

September 30, 2010 by  Filed under: SEO

Throughout the typical design process I get asked this simple question all the time. “How important is fresh content to Google?” The answer is always the same, content is key and stale content loses value over time. Blogs and CMS websites have become key to many people’s upward drive on Google, Yahoo, and Bing. This is because Blogs and CMS websites are constantly updated and content driven, thus their ranks are higher then a static site that has not changed since it was created 10 years ago. This is not to say that your site will become a high position SEO driven site just because you have a few pages that you update everyday, no, this takes work and content that evolves with the needs of you visitor base. If you write articles on things that do not have anything to do with your site as a whole then you will most likely lose those points need to excel in Google rather then gaining them.

Internet marketing is a huge beast that is constantly changing to keep up with the new demands of the larger search engines like Google, Yahoo, and the newer contender, Bing. One of the new demands of these search engines fresh content. SEO experts agree that if you wish to succeed online, you need to make people want to come back over and over again. You cannot accomplish this just by having a great layout and some good products, although, they do help.

When you rely on your site or products to keep visitors coming you may win a few over, but people get bored quickly….thus your audience slowly dwindles. To keep this from happening, it is recommended to update a few times a week or a few times a month. This keeps you fresh without sacrificing the quality of your articles and keeps you off of Google’s radar for spamming. Now, on the other side of the spectrum you do not want to update your site 100 times a day, unless you are a aggregator for other sites, because this can make your articles seem faked and dull.

I Am In A Rut, What Do I Do?
Well, eventually, it happens to all of us. You hit the wall and you seem to run out of ideas. Here is a few of the techniques I use to get back on track and keep my content fresh and my visitors happy. Of course, you can some up with your own ideas and if you think that others should know about it, leave a comment and we will be sure to add it to the list.

Reader Involvement
If you have a lot of visitors and followers who are used to fresh content and constant updates to articles everyday, get them to help. Let one of your visitors write as a guest author. This will help you give your readers something for the time being until you can get back on your feet. If you do not have any takers then you may have to make them a deal and provide a link to their blog or website if they write on yours.

Brainstorm Using Previous Articles
Maybe you had a really good article that everyone liked and responded to….maybe you had a really bad article that no one liked and it was left without comments, either way, you can use them to help you write new articles. Expand a previous article to include information you may not have known then or rework it to better aid your visitors.

Hire Writers To Write Articles for You
If you think that you cannot think of anything to write about but your visitors are waiting, then you may need to resort to hiring a writer to do some of your stuff. There are plenty of good Pay Per Posts sites that you can advertise your needs and get quality posts from good authors.

There are many SEO friendly ways to get listed on Google, Yahoo, and Bing but one of the quickest and easiest is to have fresh content on your blog or website. Stay fresh and stay up to date not only for your visitors but for the search engines as well. Make sure to ping your blog or website with to ensure you get the pings for your new content. I hope I helped you understand what content is key.
