Video Marketing and Its Potential

It is estimated that over 400 million people discover, watch and share videos online through popular platforms like YouTube and MySpaceTV. It creates a very viable channel for original creators and advertisers to reach a world-wide audience with such efficiency and speed that the only Internet can offer.

In the United States alone, about 100 million viewers watch 5.3 billion videos on YouTube. In Canada, more than 1.6 billion videos were viewed on YouTube each month. Average video viewing time is 300 minutes per month in the US and about 600 minutes in Canada.

According to a US site statistics from Nielson Ratings,

  • 18 percent of YouTube users are aged 18 and below
  • 20 percent 18 to 24 years of age
  • 19 percent 35 to 44 years of age
  • 23 percent 45 to 54 years of age
  • 20 percent Over 55 years of age

Income Levels

  • 16 percent earn less than $25,000 a year
  • 20 percent earn $25,000 to $49,000
  • 25 percent earn $50,000 to $79,000
  • 19 percent earn $75,000 to $99,000
  • 18 percent earn $100,000 to $149,000
  • 10 percent make $150,000 or more

Fifty-two percent are male and 48 percent are female. Forty-two percent have higher education and 13 percent postgraduate degrees. As online video sharing has become more diverse so is the audience. Many are looking into self-help or how-to videos to gain knowledge or to share experiences with others.

According to YouTube internal data for February 2009, more than 15 hours of video were being uploaded every minute. With hundreds of new videos uploaded daily on the internet, it is not surprising that if you want to know the latest information it will be available on Youtube. It is so simple and easy. With YouTube making it so simple to share videos with other social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter information can get viral. It is out of YouTube that many raw talents are discovered.
