What Is SEO Really All About?

March 29, 2011 by  Filed under: SEO

You don’t have to look very hard to find people explaining what search engine optimization is all about. They tell you it’s all about driving traffic to your website or blog. Some may say that if you do it right you can draw in targeted traffic, which is a lot better for your profit margin than random, untargeted traffic. Most will tell you that SEO is all about pleasing the search engines and getting your website featured on the first page of search engine results pages.

None of this is technically wrong since search engine optimization does incorporate all of those elements. The problem with these explanations is they mislead new online marketers into thinking the readers visiting their site aren’t very important. Most people explain SEO as if the search engines are supreme and the readers come second or don’t matter much at all.

This is entirely wrong! While it’s true you need a good position in the search engine results pages and the approval of the big engines like Google to get a lot of people to come check your site out, you will never be successful online if you don’t please those people once they get there.

If you want to know what search engine optimization is really about, you have to flip this equation around. SEO is really all about setting up a space that will be valued and appreciated by real people and then luring them in so they can discover what you have prepared for them.

The search engines are still pivotal here in the “luring” phase, but the most important part of the process is setting up an online space where your visitors will find the information they are looking for and plus a little more entertaining information to keep them around a bit longer. If you don’t have that in place prior to driving traffic to the site, then your efforts with SEO are completely wasted.

SEO will work to drive traffic to your website and you can get a high percentage of targeted traffic if you do it correctly. Yet, that’s not all it’s about. The quality of the website matters.

What good does it do to draw thousands of people to your website if all of them immediately click away to another site within minutes? SEO only works when your website is designed to entertain, educate, and fulfil the needs of your visitors (a conversion: downloaded a whitepaper, enquire about your service, etc). This is what search engine optimization is really about.

It’s all about pleasing your visitors so they want to stick around for awhile, bookmark the site and come back on another date, follow you through RSS feeds, and pass your URL around to their friends, relatives and colleagues. You want a site that bloggers mention with pleasure and people recommend to others because of its high quality content and entertainment factor.

So, you could really say search engine optimization is all about pleasing your visitors. The more you please the more traffic you will get. Word of mouth advertising works hand in hand with your SEO strategies, bringing greater popularity, sign ups, and sales than you have ever experienced before.
