What’s in a New gTLD?

One of the most important parts of a URL is also the one that is almost always overlooked. This is the generic TLD or the gTLD. A generic TLD is the last part of the URL that is entered into a browser. For example, if one were to visit “www. DesiredURL.com”, the gTLD would be the “com”. The TLD serves a number of important functions, the most important of which is the ability of the page in question to be appropriately indexed by search engines so that it appears at the top of the search results for a particular search term.

gTLDs are managed by special bodies or groups that have been authorized by ICANN or the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names & Numbers, a non for profit organization that is responsible for managing and running the webpage addressing system. While it is possible to set up a webpage with virtually any URL, getting your webpage a unique gTLD is not. This is because each new TLD must be approved by the ICANN. Additionally, managing and running a TLD is a technically daunting task that requires a large team of professionals and experts. For this reason, ICANN has not approved custom gTLD in the past. gTLD s are usually reserved for countries, government agencies and very large corporations that have the technical expertise and resources necessary to run a TLD.

In recent times, due to the rapid increase in the number of online pages and also partly due to the problems involved in organizing the large number of web pages of different categories into existing gTLD s, ICANN has started accepting applications for new, custom gTLD. This is something that presents a great opportunity to anyone with a business that has an online presence. What this means is that any business owner can now apply for a custom gTLD of their choice that they feel will make it easier for their customers to find them online. A great deal of searching can be eliminated if a webpage has a gTLD that is more related to it. This is because SEO or search engine optimization – which is a technique that ensures that a page appears at the top of the search results for a particular search query – is greatly affected by the TLD in which a webpage is listed. Having a custom TLD allows your website to be indexed in its own niche or category that ensures a higher rank for your page, consequently increasing your visibility and exposure to potential customers.

A custom TLD should be treated as an investment that you make to further your business reach and visibility. If you decide that this is the kind of investment that you would like to make for your business, then you must apply for a generic gTLD as this is the best possible, or rather, the only time to do so.
