Do Search Engine Rankings Still Matter?

June 11, 2011 by  Filed under: SEO

Do search engine rankings still matter? It is a simple question, but also one I am constantly amazed to hear people ask. Given the rise of Facebook and social media, one might think the question makes sense. Think it through, however, and the relevance of search engines is still very clear.

Social media in general has revolutionized the web. Facebook is the king of the hill in this regard. Frankly, it is masterpiece of an idea and implemented just as well. Unlike say a behemoth like eBay, it is simple to get up and running and incorporates the things we all love – finding old friends and socializing. Having said all this, Facebook is not a search engine and that can be a good or bad thing depending on how you look at it.

My favorite example of search engine relevance is Christmas shopping. As any retail site can tell you, Christmas is a golden time to be a seller on the web. I will also admit that I do most of my shopping online as well. Okay, all of it. I often sit down with a few adult beverages, stretch out the old fingers and start with a search. This alone makes search engines relevant and getting your site ranked a critical business step.

Specific Needs

When I have a specific need, I don’t go to Facebook or other social media to find it. Instead, I try to type the exact product name and specifics into a search engine so I can do some price comparisons and then buy. I might go to a social media site to query suggestions for a gift or what have you, but I personally don’t click on Facebook ads to find it. Some people undoubtedly do, but not enough to make Google look like a 90 pound weakling.

Social Media Importance

Having stated the above, it is important to note I am not even remotely suggesting that you should ignore social media. That would be a huge mistake. It should be a part of your marketing plan. In fact, it is clear that Google is giving high value to links that appear in social media for sites, particularly when in Tweets from a highly followed person. Such links are invaluable to getting rankings and something everyone should be pursuing as part of an SEO plan.

Do search engine rankings still matter? I hope you think they don’t and ignore them. That will make things much easier for me and my clients as well as much more profitable.
