What Is SEO? Basic On Page SEO

February 17, 2012 by  Filed under: SEO

This is a common question among new internet marketers or people trying to make money online. So just what is SEO?

SEO or Search Engine Optimization is what people and companies use to tweak and boost their websites up the Search Engine Results Page (SERP for short). If you want to get organic search traffic from Google, Bing or yahoo then you are going to need to be able to do SEO properly to get yourself onto the first page of Google and grab yourself that #1 listing. What is SEO can be broken down into 2 main categories. On-Page SEO and Off-Page SEO. These are vastly different but both of them are equally important to the search engines.

What is SEO – On-Page Optimization

On-page optimization is the first step in creating a search engine friendly post or page on your site. What you do here will have a huge impact on your site so it is important to get the basics or the foundation for your posts right and that will make the Off-Page stuff count for more. So what is seo on-page optimization and how do you do it? Depending on where you read up on this your answer will vary greatly, but I will share the methods I use on this very site to help me rank my pages and posts better. These are H tags (H1, H2, H3), text formatting, pictures (and alt tags), videos, keyword density, url, external linking and internal linking. All of these factors will play a major part in optimizing your on-page SEO. If you look at this very page you will notice that I have used most of these factors.

The title for my post is a H1 tag. The subtitles on the page should be H2 and H3 tags, so you have all 3 tags covered at least once on your page. You will want that the phrase “what is SEO” to have text formatting; namely it is bolded, italicized and underlined at least one time on the page. I also would have a picture on the page with my keyword phrase as the file name, title of the image and ALT tag of the image also. There would be a video on the page. My keyword density for the phrase “What is SEO” is about 1% (anywhere from 1-5% is good although 2-4% is ideal). The URL of the page has the keyword in it. Normally I would have an external link using my keyword to an authority site (in many cases I just link to Google or Wikipedia). The last thing you want to consider is internal linking. For basic internal linking its good to make a link at the bottom of each post or page to a relevant post or page on your site. All of these things let Google or any search engine that this page is all about “what is SEO”. This helps tremendously when it comes to ranking and also if you’re going to be using Google AdSense on your site it will let Google know what types of ads to show…
