6 Criteria Useful When Considering a Host For Your Website

  • You’ve spent a lot of time and money on your new website design. Now comes the important aspect of hosting your website. One of the first considerations is whether the web host offers Linux or Microsoft hosting services, or both. This decision will primarily depend on the operating system your company currently uses. Since you cannot tell what direction your company may take in the future, the best idea is to go with a provider that has both types of hosting.
  • Next you need to consider the price structure offered and the features they include. Some hosting companies offer cheap hosting, but then tack on other charges at a later time. If you look around, you can find websites that compare the various hosting services and costs. These sites often rate the web hosts as well, often including info on website downtime. Try to find providers that state upfront the entire web hosting package price, including any discounts.
  • What about future expansion — can the web host easily handle a change in your website design? You are growing a business, and with any luck, your customer base will increase significantly over time. Does the web host that you are considering offer upgrades to bigger hosting packages? What will be the cost and how hard will the transition be?
  • The fourth thing you need to think about is support. Just as your customers look to you for their support, you need excellent support from your hosting account. With internet marketing, it is vital that your website be online 24/7 and working properly. When their is a problem, you need to have some type of resolution asap. Does the provider you are looking at have 24 hour support? Do they have online as well as phone support? Do they have a toll-free number? What is the “wait time” when you try to contact their support team? These are just a few of the questions you should ask before “signing on the dotted line.”
  • Another thing to think about is does the hosting account include a free domain name as a benefit? Some companies offer free domain names that last as long as you keep their hosting package. But watch out, as there can be hidden costs involved. Be sure to obtain the specific terms and charges in advance, so there won’t be any “surprises” down the road.
  • Finally, will your new web host help you transfer data from your current host and will there be a fee involved? If this is a new website design, you will not have to do this step. Having changed web hosts two times, I know this can be a difficult time in the life of a company. A good web hosting provider can help make this transition a lot easier!

In summary, there are a number of things to consider when looking for a web hosting provider for your new, or existing website design. I suggest that you take the time to thoughtfully consider what each web host has to offer. By using these six suggested steps I hope that you will be able to make a good decision in a timely manner.
