Picking the Perfect SEO Company

Few business decisions are as important as choosing who to work with. Your choice of SEO company could make the difference between a resounding success and an expensive failure. Each SEO agency has its own strengths and weaknesses while some should be avoided altogether; unfortunately, choosing the right company for your business can be difficult without a specialist’s understanding of the field.

You can greatly reduce your chances of making the wrong choice by taking some simple steps. First you should think about what you want your agency to achieve and set a definite goal for your business relationship. This might be as simple as increasing the number of links leading to your website, or as complex as increasing your click through rate from the organic results associated with specific search engine queries. Having a definite and specific goal is important because it will help you differentiate between SEO companies; try to make it measurable so you can monitor the performance of your agency.

Make sure to look at the website for any company you are considering. Websites do not always provide a reliable indicator of competence or professionalism, but you should expect a strong website from any company you plan to engage in a digital marketing role. One of the first things you should look for is a section containing client testimonials. Testimonials are one of the best ways for an uninitiated observer to get a feel for the standard to which a given company operates. If you cannot find either a testimonials section or a list of clients, it is likely the company is young, which could make them a gamble (although not necessarily a bad one). In this event, you could try emailing and asking whether any of their clients can provide a recommendation.

It is also important to read any promotional copy on the website in order to understand exactly what service is on offer. Search engine optimisation covers so many different techniques and practices that two companies operating within the field may in fact offer very different services. Keep your goal in mind when reading this copy – if the company describes itself as a “link building agency” then their focus is probably on building links, while you might expect a different service from a “digital marketing agency”. See the promotional copy as a research starting point rather than a definitive indicator of focus. Wherever possible, follow up the companies on your short list with direct correspondence, particularly if you have any important queries which are not answered on the website.

As well as looking at the site itself, you could try running several SEO-related queries through a search engine (e.g. “search engine optimisation company”, “search engine optimisation agency”, “SEO company”, etc.) – if a company does not rank within the first ten pages of results for any of these terms then they either lack basic skills or care little about the online visibility and performance of their own business. Neither speaks well of the company concerned.
