Using Twitter to Increase SEO

June 4, 2012 by  Filed under: SEO

Search engines consistently use social media channels to rank peoples web pages. Twitter should be a critical part of your strategy for SEO. In some ways, Twitter is one of the best choices when it comes to searching online.

Twitter is a rich source when it comes to search engine optimization (SEO). There are specific things that you should do if you decide to use Twitter to increase your search capabilities.

Choose your names carefully: When you first set up your Twitter account, you will be asked to put in two different names. The first name is either your real name or the actual name of your business. You are allowed a maximum of 20 characters. When choosing that name, make sure that you pick one that people will be inclined to choose frequently. The second name is a username that has the @ symbol before it. You have a maximum of 15 characters for that name. That will be a challenge for you. If the name of your business is long, you should think about using some sort of abbreviation while keeping it appropriate at the same time.

Choose content that is searchable and relevant: When you are using Twitter for business, it is perfectly appropriate to inject a small amount of personal information. However, on the whole, you should stick to business information. The whole reason that people have chosen to follow you and read your content is because of the business-related information that you are sharing. It is the same content that your followers will turn around and share with other people. With that in mind, make sure to use appropriate keywords and hashtags that give you more exposure on search results for the appropriate business terms that are connected with your particular business.

Insert links to your URLs: Links in Twitter serve a very specific purpose. They lead your followers to your website and lead to additional searches online. That is exactly why your keywords are so important. The more appropriate and richer your keywords, the more top-quality followers you will get as a result.

Don’t fake it ’til you make it: When it comes to social media, you must make the effort and the commitment to work it. You can’t automate Twitter and then sit back and think that it will happen by itself because it won’t. The success of social media stems from building and maintaining relationships. No relationships have ever come out of automating anything. You need to interact with people on a very regular basis and you need to be a regular contributor to discussions, ask and answer questions, and share valuable and educational content with your followers.

Make use of Twitter mentions: You can use Twitter mentions to share links and other useful information. That is a key to success through social media. Nobody exists in a vacuum. If you want to be recognized for your professional efforts, you need to get people to talk about what you are doing. The more they talk, the better it will be for your business. Twitter is a wonderful vehicle of that. As many people are aware, Twitter has a 140-character maximum for every message that is tweeted. People react more favorably to short, effective messages than they do to long-winded monologues. People generally don’t have the time or the patience for that.

Promoting your blog: You can use Twitter to promote your blog. You can post articles and then automate them using a variety of tools. That is a good way to keep the time that you spend on it at a minimum. If people find your articles enticing and compelling, they will be very happy to retweet what you have shared with them.

Twitter is an extraordinarily important social media tool when it comes to sharing content and interacting with others online. The more you boost your exposure and reputation, the more people will come to know you and the easier it will be for others to find you online when they are searching for someone who has your expertise. It is right in front of you. You just need to reach out and grab it.
