9 SEO Tips for Newbies

June 23, 2012 by  Filed under: SEO

If you’re new to website ownership, here’s the #1 thing you need to know: In order to make your website a success, you need visitors. Lots and lots of visitors. There are lots of ways you can go about attracting visitors, but chances are the search engines are going to be your biggest source of traffic.

In order to get all that traffic, though, you need to make sure your website has a top ranking in the search engines results for your main keywords. Below are some easy SEO tips you can use to help your website rank well in search engines.

#1: Use your best keywords frequently throughout your content. Pepper them in where you have content, whether that be headlines, paragraphs, sub-headlines, titles, and so on. Don’t just throw your keywords in over and over again though. It has to sound natural!

#2: Add new content often. Search engines love websites that are updated frequently with fresh, unique content, so make sure you add new content at least a couple times a week!

#3: Use keywords in your links. If you’re linking to “red shirts” and that’s one of your keywords, call the link “Red Shirts” instead of “Click Here.”

#4: Name all your files after keywords. If you include a picture of red shirts on your website, name the image file “red shirts.” If you upload a document to your website, name it after the keyword it relates to.

#5: Get links on other quality sites. The more relevant, quality links there are out there that point back to your website, the better. Get out there and find some sites that are similar to your own and contact their owners about exchanging links.

#6: Add a blog. Remember, it’s great for your SEO when you add new content often, so if your site has a lot of static pages, you can add a blog to your site to get some new content in there every week.

#7: Make sure your website is easy to navigate and everything works properly. This will have a big impact on your site’s popularity and thus on your ranking.

#8: Focus each page of your site on a specific keyword. Don’t try to optimize one page for multiple keywords.

#9: Be patient! SEO is an ongoing process that can take a while to start showing results, so stick with it and you’ll be rewarded!
