Using Search Engine Marketing Responsibly

June 23, 2012 by  Filed under: SEO

When I started exploring the internet – during high school days, the first thing that puzzled my mind was ” how can people earn money by clicking sites?” Yes, I was skeptical, but many have earned dollars by doing Pay Per Click. You’ll sign up for a particular website, and they will give you all the sites you need to click and it has a corresponding commission on your account.

To me, it was out of curiosity that I’ve decided to do the same thing – click on ads – earn dollars. Unfortunately, I was still skeptic and so I decided to forget about the thing with a few clicks and “50 cents” on my account.

Today, I’ve come to the understanding “how much money people generate by clicking”. Now I have came to embrace and become one of its faithful servant – Search Engine Marketing. Pay Per Click is a marketing process that directs traffic to a website. After that, the publisher is paid when the ads on his website are clicked. How simple is that? It’s like generating prospects through pamphlets.

Search Engine Marketing is a broad subject. It includes all the activities involving search engines. One of the trending activity is search engine optimization (SEO). Although, SEO is far more sophisticated than PPC and includes article marketing, linking to other websites, and keyword analysis. Keywords used in Search engine optimization are also based on PPC – aside from organic searches.

Processes may differ from the two categories of SEM, but they all contribute to one goal – drawing website traffic. Traffic refers to users visiting or clicking a particular site. It is a major criteria in ranking websites. It makes a website dominate the SERP’s or search engine result pages.

Aside from drawing traffic, reputation also plays a big role. Good website reputation can be acquired by linking to expert sites (high PR) and be denoted by associating with spam sites. Seo reputation management should always be considered. If search engines found out fraudulent links on your site, it will penalize your rankings – and worst – if it will categorize your site as spam.

Site owners should always monitor their links. They can easily do it by searching their website on search engines and checking sites linked to their page. Aside from that, owners should refrain from using any related information (including personal information related to their website) when signing up with risky sites. Digital footprints – will are hard to erase, might link information and could led to bad reputation (either your website or your product).

All in all, Search Engine Marketing should be used wisely. Just like any other things, misuse and abuse will not create wanted effects (it might be for the meantime) but it will always and have been the waterloo of many publishers. Always maintain a good reputation, use SEM to the maximum, and never forget to stick to the rules of the game.
