Basic SEO Techniques to Optimize Your Website

1. W3C standards. The world wide web is a humongous resource of data that became a powerful source of information in modern life. With so many people willing to contribute to the world wide web, there are standards that keep it organized and make the information easily accessible. These standards are developed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) – an international standards organization. W3C develops technical specifications and guidelines to maximize consensus of the content to ensure high technical and editorial quality.

So, when planning your next website, make sure your development team creates a code complied with W3C standards.

2. Semantic code. Semantic code relates to the programming languages and encourages web developers to write code that describes the content rather than how the content appears on the page. The importance of semantic code in SEO is obvious. Semantically written code helps search engine spiders understand page content: what to consider a heading, what to consider a paragraph, a table, a list, etc.

3. External CSS and JavaScript files. Some web developers and online “website builder” tools include the code describing the design features of the page (CSS and JavaScript) directly into the HTML code of that webpage itself. This extra code increases the size of the HTML page and makes the entire website “heavier” which results in longer load time and prevents search spiders from easily accessing the page content.

Websites that use external CSS and JavaScript files have “cleaner” codes which are more accessible to search engine spiders because of the ability to place the content at the top of an HTML document instead of having it preceded by a lot of code. Finally, websites using external CSS style sheets are also more compatible with a wider range of devices.

4. SEO friendly URLs. When the World Wide Web started out most URLs were generated automatically and contained unreadable long strings of characters and numbers. Today, URLs have to be easy to remember for humans, and simple to read for search spiders. Though URLs don’t have a significant impact on your site’s SEO, it is wise to make them readable and contain relevant keywords.

When working on a new website make sure your development team convert unreadable URLs to those that are readable for both humans and search engine crawlers. If you are working on a website update, don’t forget to redirect your old URLs to the relevant new ones.

The above steps will give you a solid website that can be further optimized with the advanced SEO techniques either immediately after a website is created or later.
