SEO Results That Count

You’ve heard it time and time again. “We’ll get you to Page 1 on Google or Bing and the traffic will start pouring in”. Many SEO firms make bold claims about getting you to Page 1 of the SERPs (search engine results page), and the fact is they’re able to do it. With time and great keyword research, it’s quite simple to rank a business for at least a few specific terms on page 1, especially if local keywords are used.

The real question however shouldn’t be whether a website can be ranked on page 1 for specific terms, but rather can it be ranked in the top results on page 1 for those terms. How important is it being in positions 1 to 5 on page 1 for a specific keyword as opposed to being in positions 6-10?

The Importance of Good SEO Results

A recent study by SlingshotSEO has hit the nail on the head with this one. Studies have came before it but were never conclusive as to which ranks on the first page of search engines got the most traffic.

According to SlingshotSEO’s study of more than 170,000 visitors, Google’s average CTR (click through rate) for a number one ranked keyword is 18.20%. If your business has a good SEO plan, you can potentially go and get 18.20% of all the organic traffic for a certain keyword if it’s ranked 1st. Imagine you have a few keywords in the number one rank. That can be an enormous amount of traffic if the keywords gets a good amount of daily and monthly searches.

Keep in mind though, that 52.32% of traffic clicks on organic rankings while the rest either click on ads or refine their search.

*The following numbers are just meant to put things in perspective. The CTRs are real but the traffic numbers are just ballpark estimates.

Let’s say the keyword you rank for get’s 10,000 searches per month – that’s potentially a little over 1800 visitors per month to your website for just that one keyword! Now just imagine that your website converts well… but that’s a whole other topic on its own.

Now, what if you get rid of your SEO efforts and your rank for this keyword drops one position to number 2. Instead of 18.20% of all the traffic for that keyword, you’re now looking at 10.1%. Instead of that 1800 visitors per month on autopilot, you’re now getting just over 1000 visitors. Still a good amount, but you’re missing out on that extra 800 that could mean a lot of extra sales and extra dollar signs for your business.

If that keyword drops down even further you’re looking at 7.2%, 4.8%, and 3.1%of that monthly search traffic respectively for ranks 3, 4, and 5. We’ll spare you the math, but let’s just say your 1800 monthly visitors is dropping, and dropping really fast.

Drop below the 6th spot and you’re looking at CTRs in the 1% range. Just getting on page one for a specific keyword doesn’t look that good anymore does it?

To further prove this point, SlingshotSEO also found that:

With an average CTR of 18.20% for position 1 and 1.04% for position 10, this staggering difference shows that a change in rank from 10 to 1 will generate approximately 1650% more traffic and associated sales And well, if you drop off page one, you’re looking at trickles of traffic.

This is how important SEO results really are. It’s not just about page 1, it’s about above the fold in positions 1 to 5 for respectable traffic – optimally positions 1 to 3. In essence,

Higher Rankings=Higher CTRs=More Traffic=$$$

That’s what it’s all about.

Think about these numbers before you decide whether or not you need SEO services. It can make the difference between having a profitable online business or just getting by.

Having an SEO-optimized website is crucial to your business’ online success.
