Appreciating the True Value of High PR Backlinks

It is worth noting right from the start that PageRank (or PR) is generally a ranking used by Google to ‘grade’ webpages. This grading is not based on a variety of factors and it is meant to give a value to the website that ranges from 0 to 10.

Also it is important to note that while the PR only applies to a particular page – which means that while a website may have a high Pagerank on its main page, some of the other internal pages might have lower PR scores.

Based on this understanding, it should be easy enough to appreciate that ‘high PR backlinks’ need to come from a webpage that has an actual high PR score, rather than simply any website where the main page has a high PR score but the inner page where the backlink is located does not.

Also it should be apparent that backlinks from pages with higher PR count ‘more’ than pages with lower PR.

The exact algorithm that is used to calculate the precise ‘value’ of high PR backlinks isn’t known – but tests have shown time and time again that a single backlink from a webpage with a PR of 7 or so seems to provide more value than over 10 backlinks from webpages with PR1 or PR2.

Fact of the matter is, the true value of high PR backlinks is best measured in terms of how much they manage to boost your ranking on search engines – because that is what you are interested in acquiring them for, right?

Since Google (and other search engines) are focused primarily on providing the most accurate and reliable search results as possible, using backlinks to influence search results is one of their methods of increasing the reliability of those results.

And considering the fact that in general high PR websites are fairly reliable and won’t just farm out links like some other websites do – search engines tend to take that into account.

It isn’t too much of a stretch to figure that while the value of mass backlinks from low PR webpages might decrease over time, the value of having a handful of backlinks from high PR webpages is not going to. Granted, it is impossible to predict what search engines will take into account in their algorithms in the future, but it is a safe bet that the logic behind why high PR backlinks count for ‘more’ will remain the same.

Bear in mind that although ‘PageRank’ is a grading system used only by Google – other search engines have been known to employ similar grading systems and very often pages with high PageRank end up doing well on these other systems as well.
