Web Site Search Engine Optimization (SEO) for Local Business to Get on Google’s First Page

A look at numerous studies shows us that 73% of all searches online are local and within a 10 mile radius of where your business is based. If you type in the word restaurant you will get a million and one options, which could cover the entire County or Country.

However if you type in say restaurant followed by your local village in my case it would be Henfield, you will get a choice that is very local to your search. You may even choose your closest town if you want to broaden your search or research dictates that there is more activity.

The key words restaurant and in our example and Henfield have been optimized by those who have a website that has been optimized by the restaurant in the local area (Henfield) who want customers to know where they are.

SEO is short for Search Engine Optimization; in short it is what gets your web site key words recognized by the search engines.

Although Google is the most popular search engine all search engines have there own particular algorithm on how to rank your web site and all web sites have to be presented to the search engines in a particular way to stand a chance to get a high ranking.

If you have a web site and it may be a very well designed eye catching site, but if it is not optimized for your key words nobody will ever find you, the analogy I like is it is like having a billboard in the middle of the desert.

If you have a local business you need people in your area to know where you are and what it is you sell and bring customers through the door, that is if you have a brick and mortar site. Even if you do not have a shop and you are selling something from home you need to make sure your web site is Search Engine Optimized.

Today over 70% of the population search for things locally on the internet and is going to expand exponentially in the next 3 years, the traditional ways of advertising are fast fading into the distant past – I use my yellow pages for a door stop (still useful), television and newspaper advertising is dying, if you want to make sure you are here in the future make sure your site has been SEO’d.

Today more and more searches are done locally so using SEO targeted more to the area you are in will certainly be more successful in bringing in clients who are searching for your specific product or service.

Most of the popular keywords have already been taken up some time ago, for example if you are in Sussex, where Sussex is one of the few counties that is split into unique territories, you could base your search in either East or West Sussex when looking for a restaurant, you are more likely to type in restaurant and the village or town you are in rather than the County as this is too broad based and the competing web site count will be high giving you lots more work to do. But if for whatever reason you live in a County as large as Sussex you could focus on either the East or Western side if you want to narrow your focus.

That is why it is so important that your website has the right keywords listed and also to check if these are the terms that people are searching for. So in my example if you have a restaurant in Henfield and target the key words ‘restaurant in Henfield’ your site is more likely to appear near the top of Google’s first page and find customers looking for what you are offering locally instead of restaurants in any County – where the competition would be high.

It is important that, you not only choose the right keywords, but these are the terms that are being searched for on the internet each and every month, this is what can be done for you by any good company that specialises in SEO.

Choosing the right keywords is only part of the jigsaw, you have to look at your competition to see what they are doing and work on a strategy to outrank them, it is a combination of things that will help drive your site to the top of Google, but using the right key words that are being searched frequently is an excellent starting point..
