How to Rank Well in Google – Basic Tips

April 12, 2010 by Butterfly | Leave a Comment Filed under: Search

Getting a website to rank in Google’s search results is something that can make you a lot of money in this world and that can make or break a business. Ranking in Google is something that is simple but not easy. Luckily I’ve got a few key tips for you to help speed things along:

One of the most obvious but most overlooked things by people is that you actually need to put out something of quality if you want it to rank well. You’ve probably heard the phrase ‘Content is King’ and it’s absolutely true. While there is a basic formula that you can apply to rank well with most sites, it isn’t an exact science (and it isn’t a static arena – everything is changing) so you need to make sure that what you put out is actually worth something to someone and is not a load of regurgitated nonsense.

This is obviously a lot easier if you write about what you know, so I suggest doing just this. As it turns out, what you know is usually strongly linked to what you’re passionate about so it should work out quite well!

Secondly, before every trying to rank for a keyword in Google (or in any search engine for that matter) you must absolutely make sure that it is a possibility. By that I mean that you have looked at the competition for that keyword and seen that the Page Ranks of the top 10 pages are all less than 3.

Top 10 White Hat Ways to Promote Your Site

March 31, 2010 by Butterfly | Leave a Comment Filed under: SEO

I’ve compiled a little list that will help you to get your site exposed to online population and help your site index faster, get your PR higher. The list is not in any particular order, some strategies may work better for others than you so pick what you like and use it, but it would be best if you can do them all.

1. StumbleUpon and Digg – very popular sites among online community, a great place to submit your site to.

2. Propeller, OnlyWire and SocialMarker – sites whole sole purpose in my eyes is to improve indexing and ranking of websites

3. Submit articles to Ezine and Associated Content with your link attached to them. Associated content will even pay you for submitting articles to them, up to $20 per article if you know how to write good.

4. Submit comments to blogs with your link attached.

5. Personal profiles on popular social networking sites such as Facebook, MySpace can prove heavily beneficial to circulate your site’s information and backlinks.

6. Use Twitter to direct traffic, use automation software to add followers. Twitter is very popular right now; use it to your advantage.

7. Add valuable articles to forums in your niche and have a link in your signature.

8. If a competitor with high traffic-site uses Ad Sense, then you can use Google’s Site Targeting Program to get your ad directly to your competitor’s site, evading hassles of contacting the owner. Kinda black hat but it costs a little money.

9. Offering free items on your site, such as free courses, affiliate products or e-books will help gain a higher number of subscribers and repeat traffic.

10. Create a video containing informative footage regarding your site and upload on common video hosting sites such as YouTube. The link to your site must be included primarily in the About Video/Information section of the clip.

Bonus Step:

11. GET TO WORK.

Top of the Web? For Real?

March 31, 2010 by Butterfly | Leave a Comment Filed under: SEO

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if someone searched for the thing you sold and your site came up in the top 10? Some companies will claim that they can make this happen for you for a couple hundred dollars. But, before you shell out your money, there is something you should know. Anyone who tells you they can raise your Search Engine Optimization (SEO) to the “top of the web” just by paying them is playing fast and loose with the truth.

The confusion lies in a general misunderstanding of exactly how search engines like Google structure their algorithms. Search engines “spider” updated web pages with “crawlers.” These assess and filter out any in-bound links that it deems to be of low quality or importance. So, even if an SEO company can get you to the top of the web temporarily, they can’t keep you up there for long unless you really have the content and inbound links to back it up.

What You Can Do

Just like you can’t buy real friends, you can’t buy real time at the top of the web. It takes real people really reading, commenting on, and linking to your site. That’s the goal of search engines: to be nothing if not democratic.

So, save yourself some money. Here are some actions you can take on your own to make your website more SEO-friendly:

  • Use your metatags. Put the most relevant, searchable terms in your title and the first sentences of your post, making your site more visible to search engines.
  • Maintain your site. Remove outdated material, fix broken links, and update your pages. This signals the crawlers to come back and explore your site for changes. A well-kept website receives the reward of higher ranking.
  • Solicit links from high-quality, related sites. This really tells search engines that you run a quality site. Quality begets quality, and such.
  • Run regular reports on search engines for your site’s keywords. Try using Google Trends, Good Analytics, or another keyword reporter to see how your content’s key terms are doing. Take note of the highest ranking keywords and slide them into your content more frequently.

Writing Website Content – Top 10 Do’s and Don’ts

November 7, 2009 by Butterfly | Leave a Comment Filed under: SEO

This is our simple top ten guide to the do’s and don’t of writing website content, in line with the search engines code of ethics.

Website do’s

    1. Plan your website
    2. Write content that is original and keyword rich, (this doesn’t mean keyword stuffing) the more interesting it is the more people are likely to link to your website, bookmark your web pages and trust you.
    3. Write meta keywords that are reflective of the content of the page, using terms that are likely to be used when searching for that product or item.
    4. Write meta titles and meta descriptions that are reflective of the webpage, meta titles should be a short statement of the content of the web page . The meta description should be a very brief summary of the web page content. Also making good use of alt tags is both user friendly and helps by adding additional keyword content.
    5. Make your website intuitive and easy to navigate.

Website don’ts

    6. Don’t write your content for the search engines, write your content for your users. Also consider that having great search engine ranking positions is one thing but if your website cannot communicate to the visitor, they won’t hang about.
    7. Don’t fill your content with excessive keywords that make the content difficult to read and understand. (The practice is known as keyword stuffing.)
    8. Don’t try and hide things from your users that you only want the search engines to see. Search engines can identify text no matter what colour or size don’t be tempted to try to get text and links read by the search engines that you try and hide from your visitors (using small fonts, using text that is the same colour as the background etc)
    9. Don’t use irrelevant keywords in the meta keyword section of the website, part of the crawling process is to find relevance of the meta tags, the alt tags and the content, if they all contradict then the algorithm will not compute a favourable result.
    10. Don’t create multiple web pages with duplicate content, try wherever possible to change the text.

Website Marketing Or Optimizing Your Business For Success

June 20, 2009 by Butterfly | Leave a Comment Filed under: Search

There is an interesting and a relatively new marketing trend in web business. Such service known as website marketing. Although the practice had existed for several years, it is recently becoming much more widely used. Also called Search Engine Optimization – or SEO – companies are becoming a more and more common method of gaining popularity on the web.

The aim of these companies is to give online businesses the chance to increase in the ranking of their sites in search engines results by increasing their return in organic searches (this refers to the natural results returned after a keyword search has been entered in a search engine). In other words, the higher the ranking, the greater the likelihood that people will see and visit a particular web page. Therefore, if you run a web business looking to increase sales, SEO just may be the tool you want to consider as an alternative to paid advertising.

Some SEO companies claim to offer better potential for return on investment than pay per click advertising, because once a particular site has achieved a top ten position in a search results page, it will receive a much greater volume of visits, without having to pay more per visit. The services they offer range from a website review to full optimization and link development, depending on the size and type of the website, and the individual needs of a particular business. An interested client usually could get started by providing the details of their business, including relevant keywords/phrases, to request a quote and their professional team will research the site and determine how best to optimize it for search engines.

But what makes one company better than another out there? For one thing, some provide a guarantee on their results, or the client is entitled to a full refund. Although, it can take some time before a customer may notice any improvement or changes in ranking – anywhere from 6 months to up to 18 months, according to some search marketing firms – they do guarantee a placement in the top ten, or first page of results for three key search engines: Google, MSN, and Yahoo searches. Also, some pride themselves on being committed to using only ethical approaches to Search Engine Optimization, respecting the principles of major search engines. This means that they stay away from so-called “black hat” practices, like link farms, which could result in negative consequences such as a website’s removal from a search engine.

This is all part of legitimate companies’ overall commitment to legitimizing SEO as a marketing strategy. Your goal as a consumer is to find a company whose services are run entirely by experienced industry professionals who can help clients make more informed decisions based on detailed the information available on their website. A hint to such a firm could be a site which offers easy to understand tutorials for potential clients, explaining how they operate, as well as clearly outlining their guarantee to customers.

For those considering search engine optimization for their own website, it is important to remember that guaranteeing a higher placement in search engine returns does not necessarily translate in to an increase in sales, only that more people are likely to view a site. In addition, there are consequences to businesses relying too much on search engine traffic, as there are other sources of traffic, such as links from other sites.

Nevertheless, when you consider the fact that the majority of people search for a type of business using this method, the promise of getting a company website placed on the first page of Google’s results will certainly be appealing to anyone interested in improving exposure to their business. In general, as a marketing strategy, the goal of any well respected SEO firm is to maximize the number of potential customers that will see your site, which is fundamental to increasing sales.
